Orbiting the Giant Hairball

I went thrifting today and found a copy of one of my all-time favorite books. It’s called ‘Orbiting the Giant Hairball’ by a creative director from @hallmark named Gordon Mackenzie. He was a creative genius who, although greatly rewarded in his corporate career, was also into calling out the patriarchy before it was ever even a thing. His little handbook gave me hope as a young creative who kind of sensed the world of marketing was for tougher people than me. And I related to Gordon by sensing his kind would never really ‘fit in’ to the corporate world, either. But there we were, doing our best to keep our sensitive creative spirits alive. When I met Gordon at a conference in San Diego in the late 90s, I was fortunate to have him sign his book for me and endure an awkward hug. Looking back, I think I should have hugged him more confidently because I’ve never forgotten his wise words, still so relevant to designer types like me today.
